This cartoon is a strong argument explaining the difference how things happen nowadays when a child is doing bad in school compared to the 1960's. Back then, students were to blame if they were performing poorly in school. Now, parents like to believe anything their children tell them, even when the student tells their parents that it is the teachers fault they are failing. Teachers are not to blame, the student needs to work harder in class, rather than complain that their teacher is not teaching them well. Teachers are paid a low enough wage already to teach things to the student. If a student is failing, that student needs to work harder, it is not the teachers job to make sure that student is keeping up with everybody else, and parents need to stop blaming the teachers for this madness.

Monday Matters #16

Some people perceive education to be how well of grades a person get. If somebody gets straight A's through school and never amounts to anything in life that does not mean they are more educated than a B student who created their own company. Just because somebody got good grades in high school doesn't mean they are a good teacher. A good teacher is not somebody that knows everything, a good teacher is somebody that can get the information across to their students. Good teachers should be given an internship and if they teach the students well, then they should get a good paying job right away so they stick with it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/03/us/middle-class-pay-elusive-for-teachers-report-says.html?ref=education&_r=0

This article discusses how the paychecksdor some teachers in certain cities are much lower than they should be. Teachers in certain cities can reach max pay salary of over $100,000 very quickly, while in other cities it takes over 30 years to make that much money. Techera need to be payed more from the start so that they can base their lives off the job and stick around longer. With too low of a pay, teachers can't live the lives normal middle class people would because they have to wait for a long time to get a raise. The main point this article gets at is that teachers should be able to reach their max salary much quicker than they do now.

http://www.teach-nology.com/tutorials/teaching/poverty/

Children's ability to learn is greatly affected by poverty. Statistics have shown throughout the years that the smarter kids are almost always the students that come from families with higher incomes. The effect of home life on children is of the utmost importance and  one of the biggest factors in determining children's intelligence. The smarter children don't have as much to worry about in the class so they do better than children who have to worry about their parents financial situation. Children from lower classes need to worry about their parents financial situation and do not do as well as smarter children.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/23/sunday-review/studying-for-the-test-by-taking-it.html?ref=education

This article is trying to get the point across that knowledge is not what many people perceive it to be. At The University of Texas, the professor threw out the final and replaced it with a series of quizzes that the students took at the beginning of every class. The students ended up doing better than past students did on the final because they studied throughout the entire year instead of trying to cram in information for the final. By cramming, a person forgets just about everything by the next week. However, people can remember everything about their favorite sports team. This is because the brain choose what it thinks is important and remembers it. The person does not control what he/she knows, the brain does it itself.

Monday Matters #12

In my opinion, I believe the media tries to hide everything that reflects poorly on the U.S government and try to make it seem as if Isis is just attacking us for no reason. When it comes down to the media, you can never really believe anything unless you see it first hand and are able to make your own opinion on it. I am not saying that the United States did something to provoke Isis against us, however, I just think that the media is very one sided. My opinion on Isis is that there is not much the U.S can do about it but protect itself from them and not try to control what they are doing. If we keep trying to control them, it would never end; as soon as we think they're done and we pull the soldiers out, Isis will just start right back up again. The media is too difficult to fully comprehend and it is impossible to find a completely neutral source.

http://www.youngcons.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/isis-cancer-treatment.jpg

This political cartoon is a political cartoon basically saying that the United States should just eliminate the whole threat of Isis by blowing them up. This author believes that the United states definitely has enough power to destroy Isis completely and Obama should step up and destroy them. The author compares getting rid of Isis to a form of cancer treatment by just blowing up the whole cancer. Blowing up Isis may temporarily get rid of the problem, but I believe something will eventually come up even worse than Isis.

This artist views the Isis situation in a different way. He/she is portraying an american plane bombing Isis while dropping signs that promote peace. This is exactly how the media is portraying the United states military. We are attacking them much worse than anything they are doing to us, however, the U.S likes to portray itself as wanting peace and doing the right thing. THis author is correct, we do not know what the military is doing behind closed curtains.

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/09/08/return-war

This article talks about why Isis is a problem in the United states and gives a background on the Syrian terrorist group. Isis specializes in suicide bombings which is why the author of this article strongly supports Obama in his efforts to continue to attack ISIS from the air. Isis has also beheaded one american reporter and threatened to behead another if Obama did not stop with the airborne attacks on Syria. This article is most likely accurate, however, there is no way of telling because it is an american news article from New York, which could very easily be hiding the truth.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/18/iraqi-civilian-death-toll-5500-2014-isis

This article just gives a quick background of the statistics of how many civilians Isis has killed. Over the past 6 months, Isis has massacred civilians in Syria and the death toll has risen to over 5,500 this year. It just shows that Isis is not to be messed with from the ground, but they need to be stopped as soon as possible before more innocent people are killed over in Syria, or worse, if they start coming into the United States.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/10/04/video-purports-to-show-islamic-state-beheading-british-hostage-alan-henning/

The article I have chosen talks about the war that is starting to form between the United States and The Islamic Group, ISIS. This author of this article talks about how ISIS was beheading our people and are threatening to keep doing it if we keep bombing them. However, the artcle does not say how the war started between the U.S and ISIS. The MEdia is very biased and definitely sways the way people look at things. Although I definitely do not support ISIS and am not trying to defend them, the media is most likely hiding something that our country has done to set ISIS off on us. The news channel that created this company was American, Fox News, and it would look very bad if they were talking bad about something that The United States has done, which is why the media wants to portray this situation as ISIS just attacking us for no reason.

Monday Matters #7

Mike Lupica, over the past few weeks, covered what he believed to be the biggest deal in sports for that week in the state of New York; The first one concerning Jeter, then Eli Manning, and lastly, the high school football team cancelling the rest of their season because of the hazing that was going on there. He likes to address both sides of the story, however it is easy to interpret the strong bias that he seems to give off and his articles seem a bit one sided. Over all, I like to read Lupica's articles because he views society from the sporting standpoint, like myself.

Monday Matters #6

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/high-school/lupica-forget-victims-article-1.1971412

This week, Lupica wrote an article about the hazing that recently occurred on a New York high school football team. Some members did some very inappropriate things to some of the younger members of the team and are being punished by the New York Police. Some parents are more upset over the fact that the school cancelled the remainder of the team's games for the rest of the season than they are mad over the hazing that occurred at the school. Mike Lupica believes that it doesn't make sense that the coach or none of the other students knew anything about this and thinks that something should have been done immediately to put an end to it. Lupica is pretty angry at what occurred at Sayreville War Memorial High School. He believes that what was done there was very wrong and inappropriate and those students involved in the hazing are completely responsible for their actions and deserved to be punished.

Source: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/lupica-goodell-law-victims-article-1.1963759

The subject of Lupica's post this week is on Roger Goodell and why he is doing what he is doing. It all started with Ray Rice. Goodell knew the intensity of how hard Rice hit his wife. Goodell didn't want to make one of the best players in the league look bad, which would make the NFL look bad, which is why he left it at a two week suspension. When the video was realeased and people realized that Goodell was hiding evidence, he all of a sudden is cracking down on everybody in the NFL for something that they did in the past but the NFL never did anything about, such as star running back, Adrian Peterson.

Lupica is clearly against Roger Goodell and does not agree with how he is running the National Football League, one of the most watched sports in the country. Lupica Writes, "One more huge problem for Roger Goodell and the National Football League these days is that Goodell himself has been laid out by the very conduct policy that he instituted when he succeeded Paul Tagliabue and set himself up as prosecutor and judge and jury, “The Enforcer” who posed on the cover of Time magazine and was praised — at least in his early days — as the guy who had taken care of the bad guys in his sport like he was Clint Eastwood in “Unforgiven.”" (Lupica 1) Mike Lupica is upset over the fact that Roger Goodell made such a small punishment in the beginning for such a serious incident. Then, he proceeded to make it worse by trying to suspend everybody else. This article is basically Lupica trying to tell Goodell to step down before he makes it even worse than it already is.

Source:http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/lupica-eyes-turn-eli-manning-article-1.1955541

Mie Lupica, reporter for the New York Daily News claims that now that Jeter has retired, Eli Manning is taking over as the face of New York spots teams. Although Eli has his ups and downs, Lupica really believes that he is a great quarterback and is capable of leading the Giants to another Super Bowl season. Last year was Eli Manning's worst season of his career, however, he is turning it into a good thing because the Giants are playing exceptionally well this season. Eli Manning has a great reputation to uphold as the New York Giants starting quarterback and now, the face of all New York Sports.

Speaker: The speaker is unknown, but you can assume it is a person whom is unhappy with the way the rich in the United States is treated much better than the poor.

Audience: The audience can be any citizen of the United States. The argument is aimed towards the government

Subject: The subject of this cartoon is the unnecessary taxes the government is putting on the poor and that they are not taxing the rich enough. The poor and middle class people are being treated very unfairly.

Purpose: The purpose of this cartoon is to explain that the government needs to stop taking from the poor and middle class and start taking more from the rich. Some people are having to pay an abundance of money each year for things that are completely irrelevant to them while the rich are getting richer.

Editorial : http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2014/09/15/bruce-levenson-nba-atlanta-hawks-dewayne-wickham/15628853/

Some people believe that what Levenson did was not racist, that it was just an attempt to bring in more fans to the Hawks games. I believe that Levenson is acting out of selfishness and is treating his fans and his organization unfairly, especially because of the fact that he most likely does not personally know any of the fans that show up to the games. He is more worried about making money than having a good team and fan base. The fact that Levenson is going behind his team's back and sending racist e-mails like this make him no better than any of the 'horrible' people that come to the games. The fact that he is stepping down is not enough considering he can force the NBA to help him sell his team for much more than it is worth and Levenson will make an abundant profit from something that seemed horrible to begin with.

Article:
http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/07/us/atlanta-hawks-owner-bruce-levenson-racist-email/index.html?hpt=us_c2

Atlanta Hawks Owner Bruce Levenson is allegedly selling his team after being caught sending a racist email about 2 years ago concerned about how the fans at the games are almost all black. He stated that he wanted to bring in more white people to the games because the black people were scaring the whites away from coming to the game. Levenson had some ideas about how to 'bring the whites back in', such as bringing in some white cheerleaders and playing music that a 40 year old white man would listen to, however, they were all shot down. He is now willingly selling his team after the email was leaked to the public.
This is unacceptable for an NBA team owner to be talking bad about his team's own fans and he should be facing much worse consequences. Although being racist is not illegal, Levenson should have to pay for it somehow other than having to be looked down upon and having to sell his low income team.
